Our online programs support people going through change and transformation – either in their personal lives, in their careers or in their workplaces. This is the first of a series of Change and Transformation related articles that we will post here in our blog.
Today, we would like to walk you through the fundamental coping process when we face change, and how the knowledge about it can help us to strengthen our own resilience.
COVID is deep impacting change that leads to transformation
Covid is more than a change, it’s a transformation. It impacts the whole world, and it is fundamentally impacting our lives: The way we work, the way we live and the way we interact with each other. It modifies and reshapes our behaviors, beliefs, and assumptions for good and all – slowly and steadily. And this is the transformational character of it.
Who would have thought that the outbreak of COVID 19 would develop into a pandemic, and it would take so long? Is there an end in sight? Can we go back to the lives we used to live before? Do we know what our world and our lives will look like after this pandemic is somehow under ‘control’…?
Sadly, no one can answer these fundamental questions right now! We need to live with the unknown, though we are all longing desperately for control and predictability. And this is draining, no doubt!
Day by day, every one of us is trying to cope and to adapt to an COVID-driven environment (and there are many more drivers indeed) that is characterized by limitation, uncertainty, unpredictability, and ambiguity. During a day, we might experience a full range of emotional highs and lows while trying to get our heads around how to live our lives in a world that is constantly changed and altered by sudden groundbreaking news and unexpected developments. These could be news about vaccine limitation, new virus mutations, new travel restrictions, new outbreaks, new lockdown measures, etc. If we are honest with ourselves, it sometimes feels like a punch in our face when we hear these updates. BAAAAHM …. And then the emotions start to run wild! Like being on a roller coaster …
Natural Human Reaction to Change
However, does this emotional process kind of feel familiar and relatable to you? Like it’s not the first time you experience it? would bet so! What you experience is the natural human response to change. It is a common coping process, but usually a very personal and individual one.
The common process was first documented and described by the psychiatrist, humanitarian and hospice pioneer Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in 1969 in her publication ‘On Death & Dying’, where she wrote about the ‘5 Stages of Death’. Since then, this process became adopted into the generic ‘Kübler-Ross Change Curve®’ .
So why is it worth and essential to know about the change curve and the natural human response to change?
Know Your Curve and Build Resilience
Knowing and relating to the common human reaction to change allows us to better understand our own, personal coping process when facing change – and the personal coping process of others in our close environment.
- It helps to strengthen your own resilience and coping capability.
- It helps to learn and accept that many things are out of your control range.
- It helps to learn and accept that being emotional when facing change is fine – since it’s a natural coping process.
- And it helps us to acknowledge and reflect on the experienced emotional turmoil when impacted by a sudden change.
This is a very important step to get an outside look on your situation. Allow yourself reflection time to ask yourself where you are with your emotions (High-Low, still denial or already exploring new solutions?). Once you can map out which phase you might be in on the change curve, you can take counter actions to help you moving forward smoother – or to support others or influence for change.
