Happy New Year! Start 2022 Ready & Motivated To Invest In Your Happiness!
Congratulations, everybody! We’ve almost reached the end of 2021. Let’s take a minute to look back over the past twelve months and recognize how much we’ve learned,
According to a CIPD 2020 survey report about Health and Wellbeing at Work, there has been a 37% increase in stress-related absence at work since last year, and 89% of employees said that they have worked while feeling unwell.
So despite all the fancy perks and activities companies plan, employees do still get overly stressed at work. These issues do not only affect individual wellbeing, but also the business as a whole through decreased productivity and performance. Learn how to boost morale, take better care of yourself and your team and invest in wellbeing!
Employee wellbeing relates to all aspects of working life, including the environment employees work in, the climate in the workplace and how a workforce feels about their day to day work. Wellbeing is a key factor determining an organization’s long-term success and effectiveness.
According to the CIPD’s health and wellbeing report, HR managers identified within a survey that only 40% of UK businesses have a standalone employee wellbeing strategy. What’s more, mental health is responsible for 56% of long-term unplanned absences, making it the most common cause of long-term absence.
Employee Wellbeing involves several categories of wellness, which may include:
– Physical Health
– Emotional Health
– Psychological Well Being
– Social Relationships
– Financial Stability
Essentially, employee wellbeing looks at employee experience at work from a holistic view and asks, “do they have what they need to do their best work?”. Looking at employee wellbeing in your workplace is important for reducing work related stress or instituting incentives for healthy living.
Employee Engagement on the other hand, is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. It has been proven to:
– Reduce staff turnover
– Improve productivity and efficiency
– Increase employee retention
– Deliver higher profits
– Boost business connectivity and performance
– Reduction in absenteeism
The emotional commitment they have for their company means engaged employees actually care about the work they do. They don’t work just for the pay, but work on behalf of the organisation’s goals, ultimately creating more success for the company.
1. Make Recognition and Praise Part of Your Company’s Culture.
One of the most desired – and easiest to implement – wellbeing initiatives is simply to recognize employees for their effort and achievements. A recent survey shows that 70% of employees say recognition makes them feel emotionally connected to peers while another 70% say recognition makes them happier at home. The impact of a recognition-rich culture cannot be understated.
This is especially effective for Millennial employees, who are accustomed to receiving praise from a very young age. Being part of the so-called “self-esteem generation,” they often crave recognition more than a pay raise.
A handwritten thank you note, or formal recognition program, go a long way towards creating a positive emotional environment that supports wellbeing.
2. Invest in Affordable Weekly (Virtual) Employee Wellbeing.
What would your team do if they could come together weekly for live-taught Meditation, Yoga, Fitness, team-building and other wellness classes taught by experts? They’d thrive. Practicing mindfulness is associated with several facets of overall well-being, including reduced stress, enhanced relationships, and stronger focus.
3. Create Impactful Mentoring Programs
Along with comprehensive benefits like medical coverage, dental coverage, and retirement policies, a strong mentoring program is a proven way to keep employees satisfied.
The health benefits of a mentoring program are the following:
– Emotional benefits: It provides a support system to the mentee during critical phases of their career. Mentors, on the other hand, get the satisfaction of imparting wisdom.
– Supports isolation: Employees with mental health issues like depression and anxiety disorder often feel isolated. A mentor works as a support system for them.
– Increases self-confidence: Although low self-esteem is not a mental health problem, increasing confidence in employees is a part of employee wellbeing initiatives. And a mentoring relationship helps increase one’s self-esteem.
If you cannot afford that, you can create among your staff an awareness about the importance of supporting each other and working together towards the same goal. You as a manager need to remember about it as well and support your staff as much as you can as their leader.
